Microsoft Office Upgrades

In many cases, desktop deployments and refreshes also include the deployment of Microsoft Office, a key desktop application and business productivity tool. UST has real world experience of deploying and upgrading all versions of Office including upgrades to Microsoft Office 2007. This release has revamped the user experience to entirely new levels with its intuitive tool bars and front-end look whilst its inter-functionality with other products increases productivity and aids collaboration.

Office 2007 includes more applications than previous versions including: InfoPath 2007 and Groove 2007. It is also seen as an enabler for the new Microsoft collaboration suite of products that include; Exchange 2007, SharePoint 2007, Office Communications Server 2007 and Groove. Organisations are now leveraging this integration to increase the productivity of their users and key benefits of Office 2007 include:

  • Ability to save documents natively into PDF format using a free Microsoft plug-in.
  • Brand new file format and improved document security and collaboration options. This uses XML to enable easier integration with business processes and is compressed to ensure much smaller file sizes. A compatibility pack for Office XP allows users to open, edit and save in the new Office 2007 file formats.
  • Improved granularity of control of the user experience through Group Policy.
  • New Office “Fluent UI”, also known as the office ribbon. For new Office users, this is more intuitive and for existing users, key tasks can be performed more quickly once they have become accustomed to it.
  • New To-Do Bar creates a consolidated view of day-to-day priorities, including e-mail messages flagged for follow-up, upcoming appointments, tasks from Office OneNote 2007, Office Project 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services Web sites.

Instant Search allows users to locate information more quickly through keyword searches through Office Outlook 2007, including attachments.

Previous versions of Office required several tools to customise Setup and to manage Office after installation. The new Setup architecture in the 2007 release simplifies the process of installing and maintaining Office.

With the significant changes made to the user experience, Microsoft has released a number of tools to enable users to become familiar with the new user interface. These include the “Get Started” tab, which is available for Word, Excel and PowerPoint and provides links to interactive guides, online training, demonstrations and videos to help your users get up to speed.

The key to deploying Office 2007, is understanding the exact impact to your organisation and environment. Upgrading from older versions generally means more feature benefits but higher training and impact costs. UST’s experience shows that key deployment considerations include; training approach / effort and the migration approach / effort for existing Office forms, templates and macros. UST can simplify this deployment for you and we offer a number of added value implementation services that incorporate; impact analysis and planning, document migration and integration testing.
